Where We Have Been
We have a church rich in history.   First Baptist Church of Ypsilanti was organized in 1836. The Lord has worked in our church in times
of trials and used our church to give to the community that we live in.

Here are some of the highlights of our history.

  • First Baptist Church of Ypsilanti is a very stable church and congregation. We have been blessed with only 4 in the past 90 years.
The shepherds of our church have been Rev. William R. Shaw from 1925 through 1964, Rev. William Bingham from 1964 through 1981, Rev. Vivan Martindale from 1981 through 1999. Rev. Galen Lowery served as our interim until Pastor Randy Johnson joined us in
    May of 2001.

  • First Baptist has always enjoyed a strong mission outreach and this has been exemplified by our assistance in founding many churches in the area including Grove Road Baptist Church, Willow Run Baptist Church, and Chilson Hills Baptist Church.  Financial assistance was given to the Metropolitan Baptist Church and other area churches.   Rev. Shaw was a community leader and served as President of the Ypsilanti Kiwanis Club and was very active in the Salvation Army.   Rev. Bingham was instrumental in establishing the Meals on Wheels program, which still resides in the church. First Baptist also extends itself into the community by outreach to Eastern Michigan University, which benefited from Rev. Martindale’s focus on campus ministry. First Baptist has also served the community for almost 40 years by providing a Living Nativity for Ypsilanti and the greater Ypsilanti community.  During the years with Pastor Randy Johnson, our church has served with and supported many local agencies and many members went on mission trips to the Dominican-Republic, Haiti, Spain, and the hurricane ravaged states to the south.

  • Our church has also benefited from a tremendous group of lay leaders who have been active in the community and spreading the gospel.  The congregation has risen to the occasion numerous times throughout our history and includes re-building the church on a new site following the fire of 1936.  The congregation cleaned and carried thousands of bricks to the new church site so they could be used in building the new church.

  • First Baptist is a member of the American Baptist Churches of the U.S.A.  Through this partnership and involvement with other Christian para-church organizations, we recognize and work toward the unity of faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.

All are welcome to attend and worship with us.  Many people have found their home here and joined us in helping lead others to Christ.

Folks who have never attended church or those from different denominational backgrounds discover First Baptist is a place where they can start or continue their spiritual journey.  Our church is ethnically diverse and consider this one of our great strengths as we work together to serve Christ.

Our church has been on a vision journey the last two years and we are excited to go along with where God is leading us.  Read about it here or come share in worship and fellowship next Sunday at 11 am.

It is with a sense of awe that we look at all the gifts which our Lord has bestowed upon us. We recognize that this places great responsibility on us and we shall continually strive to be faithful to the inscription on the front of our building:

“Dedicated to the Glory of God and the Service of Man".
